Data and information must be shared among countries and regions if increasing risks from environmental disasters are to be avoided and adequate protection provided for dwindling natural resources. The structured sharing of accurate, timely, and compatible data about the status of such resources nationally, regionally, and globally is intrinsic to their equitable use world-wide. The development and possible utility of two environmental database programs - an information system developed for the Danube River Basin in 1990-1991 and an EU Phare -European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) sponsored Environmental Standards Database (ESD)- are traced and their potential for use in improved environmental management is evaluated. The potential value of each data system to national and international decision-makers, scientists, non-governmental organizations and the general public, as well as the cost of keeping them current for their respective uses are described.
