As in other countries with a significant livestock production, the situation in Denmark 10 years ago was that nitrogen losses were higher than acceptable from an environmental point of view. Thanks to the early regulation of spreading of animal manure and a combination of motivation and legislation these losses have been reduced significantly from year to year. In the long run, the utilization of phosphorus in livestock-feeding has to be improved and it is also necessary to reduce the amount of copper and zinc in the feed. But as far as nitrogen is concerned, it seems that Danish agriculture can continue to produce large amounts of animal products for the world market in a sustainable way.
