In conclusion, we have developed an approximate, semiclassical and largely ana ytical theory of the two-electron distributions arising from nonsequential double ionization of atoms by strong laser fields and applied it to derive qualitative estimates for the shape of the momentum distribution of doubly charged ions. It has been shown that the effect of electron - electron correlation ab initio accounted for by the Keldysh-type theories of the nonsequential double ionization in is expressed, in the tunneling regime, in terms of the cross-section for impact ionization in the Born approximation. As well it is has been shown that though the two-humped structure of the distribution in the ion momentum along the direction of the laser field owes its origin to the kinematics of the reseattering process real position and width of the maxima are acutely sensitive to the shape of the inelastic cross section.
