The electrokinetic effect consists in generation of electric current by fluid flow through porous media and in the reverse effect of inducing flow by application of an electric field. Its primary cause is the difference in mobilities of ions, some of which are fixed at the surface of the solid matrix of the porous medium, while some dissolved counterions can move with the pore fluid, or force it to move, if an electric field is applied. Macroscopically, the flow and electric current are described by the equations u = -k/η ▽p + β▽ψ, I = -S[▽ψ - C▽p], C = α/S. (1.1) Here, k is the medium permeability, η is the fluid viscosity, S is the medium electric conductivity customarily expressed in terms of the fluid conductivity σ_f and the medium formation factor F as S = σ_f/F with F up to several tens. The Onsager relation holds between the coupling coefficients C and β:β = α ≡ CS. Details are given in [26, 9, 8].
