The recording processes in magnetic disk media are described so as to highlight the factors which influence the signal and noise characteristics of magnetic recording channels. The signal manifestations of intersymbol interference (ISI) are discussed in the context of system performance and some basic aspects of signal recovery are dealt with via examples taken from peak detection, flat equalisation, Nyquist filtering, and partial response techniques. How they deal with ISI and noise will be described and comments made about error mechanisms.
