Key technologies obtained by materials research and disk structure development have realized multimedia rewritable 4.7GB DVD products and high data rate phase-change optical disks. Application of blue laser light and volumetric(dual layer) recording have the potential to increase recording density to be 20 Gbit/in~2 by NA=0.6 lens. The MRWM (mark radial width modulation) recording technique has demonstrated that the phase-change optical disk has multi-level high density recording capability. Multi-level recording method and a NA of 0.85 in combination with other technologies show the potential recording density of the phase-change optical disk to exceed 100Gbits/in~2. Research level of Super-RENS technology shows now 4 times density enhancement capability, and it could lead to 280Gbit/ in2 recording density in phase-change optical disk in the future.
