摘要

When the silicon solar cell appeared on the scene, it was expected to find a large market in terrestrial applications. Workers at Bell Telephone Laboratories originally foresaw a splendid future for the device as a terrestrial solar energy converter, and they sought to prove this capability by installing a solar cell array on a telephone pole in Georgia, to power a repeater amplifier. This array fulfilled its function satisfactorily for over a year, with bird droppings being the only problem encountered. However, based on original installation costs, the cost of the energy generated was not competitive with conventional power. In early planning for the space program, decision makers apparently considered solar cells to be an insignificant and unreliable curiosity, and decided to equip US spacecraft with chemical batteries which were able to provide power for only a few weeks. Eventually, the Vanguard I satellite was the first to be equipped with solar cells, in 1958.
