Biodegradable polymers with functional groups can be prepared through copolymerization of lactones and functional hydroxy acid and a-amino acid derivatives. Statistical copolymers with pendant carboxylic aid or amine groups can be prepared. Block copolymers containing poly(hydroxy acid) and poly(α-amino acid) blocks can be prepared by stepwise application of controlled ring-opening polymerizations of NCAs and lactones. Biospecific peptide sequences can be introduced into the polymer structure either by biding through pendant functional groups in the side chains or as a peptide segment in block copolymers. Stra egy of using amphiphilic block copolymers for designing biospecific polymer surfaces is presented.
