The use of biodegradable polymers in the field of orthopaedics is fast becoming mainstream. These polymeric systems offer a host of advantages over the more traditional metal devices in the arena of fixation. However, issues related to inferior mechanical properties are still relevant and preclude the use of such biodegradable devices for the fixation of large bones. In the field of tissue engineering, biodegradable polymers have been used extensively and their role is bound to increase as tissue engineering systems become commercially available.
