Phase array ultrasonci testing equipment is currently used for practical NDT applications in the aerospace industry. This technology offers many advantages in comparison to conventional techniques such as beam steering, beam focusing, and electronic scanning. In some cases, exclusion of conventional ultrasonic testing due to complex geometry, anisotropy, or size and orientation of defects in a material may be overcome by the use of phased array ultrasonic devices. This paper presents an overview of the asic principles as well as the electronic tools and probes used. Thin aluminium welds such as friction stir welds, titanium casting inspection, fan disk inspection and composite examination are all applications addressed by the phased-array technology reviewed. Discussion of advanced phased-array techniques, such as dynamic depth focusing, will conclude this presentation.
