In this research,effective reinforcing method for increasing bearing capacity has been investigated and reinforcing mechanism has been clarified by laboratory model tests and the corresponding numerical simulations.The numerical analyses are carried out with a finite element program called FEMtij-2D,using the elastoplastic subloading tij model.The frictional behavior between the reinforcement and the ground is simulated with an elastoplastic joint element.Changing the length and fixity conditions of the reinforcements several tests are carried out.It is revealed that the effectiveness of reinforcement and the bearing capacity of reinforced ground depend on the position,the length and the fixity condition of reinforcement.A significant increase of the beating capacity is observed if the end boundaries of the reinforcement are kept fixed together with the soil,when it is set up in the ground with an appropriate depth and length.The numerical results accurately describe the experimental findings,since the simulations accounted appropriately for both the mechanical behaviors of the soil and the reinforcement as well as the frictional behavior between them.
