Following years of refinement and optimisation mostrntelecommunications broadcast satellites have become,rnclose to “commodity products”. This is demonstratedrnthrough the reduction of cost and schedule to a level wherernan operator can now procure a new geostationary broadcastrnspacecraft in just over 2 years, from any one of 5-6rnmajor suppliers world wide. Clearly this is a majorrnachievement for the space industry. Key to enabling thisrnachievement is the standardization in payload design thatrnhas occurred over the last 20 years. This standardizationrnhas allowed both spacecraft manufacturers and the lowerrntier suppliers of payload equipments develop commodityrnproducts with essentially the same performance specificationrnfor application in multiple missions. This reducesrnschedule through less bespoke development and reducesrncost through the economies of scale associated with bulkrnprocurement, production and test.rnIt is becoming apparent that the current standardizedrnpayload design has limitations which do effect the intendedrnapplication of the spacecraft and its ability to generaternrevenue for the operator. These limitations are associatedrnwith the ability of the spacecraft to adopt to changingrnmarket conditions or its payload “flexibility”. Thisrnpaper will discuss how these limitations are manifest in therncurrent standardized architecture and the solution EADSrnAstrium has developed with the support of BNSC & ESArnto over come many of these limitations.
