This paper describes the development of a novelrntool for the design of environmentally optimizedrnArea Navigation (RNAV) approach procedures.rnThis new development is an extension of a toolrncalled NOISHHH which was developed earlierrnfor the analysis and design of noise abatementrnprocedures around airports. The NOISHHHrntool is essentially a framework that combines arnnoise model, a Geographic Information System,rnan emissions inventory model and a dynamicrntrajectory optimization algorithm to generaternflight paths that minimize the noise impact inrnthe vicinity of an airport, while satisfying allrnoperational and safety constraints. The RNAVextendedrnversion of NOISHHH offers thernpossibility to calculate routes that can bernprogrammed into the Flight ManagementrnSystem (FMS) currently available in mostrnaircraft cockpits. The capabilities of the RNAVcompatiblernversion of NOISHHH are illustratedrnin an example scenario based on an instrumentrnapproach to one of the runways of Schipholrnairport in the Netherlands.
