The variations of oxygen and nitrogen contents during vacuum induction melting (VIM) Ni-6Cr-2Mo-6W-5Co alloy using CaO crucible were studied. It has been found that about 50 percents of oxygen and 6 percents of nitrogen could be removed during melting. Thermodynamic calculation showed that [C]-[O] reaction was far from getting equilibrium. The experimental results of carbon and oxygen contents in the liquid alloy corresponded with calcuated data when P_(CO) was 10~3 to 10~2 Pa. Al addition is beneficial to deoxidization and denitrogenation. Adding 0.5% Al could reduce oxygen content to below 6 ppm and nitrogen content to below 3 ppm. The oxygen and nitrogen solubilities with various degrees of vacuum as well as different amounts of Al addition at 1873 K were calculated. The calculated values corresponded with the experimental results. Increasing vacuum is an effective means of accelerating denitrogenation.
