Six wires containing different alloying elements and two kinds of shielding gases of mixture of 80%Ar and 20%CO2 and pure CO2 were used to study the factors like alloying elements and welding procedures that influence the properties of GMAW weld metals. The results showed that all the Ar-rich mixture gas weld metals with low Als have high impact energy, over 130J at -40℃; C,Ni,Cr,Mo,Cu act as strengthening elements but it seems that these elements don’t exert great influence on the toughness of the weld metals. What considerably affect the toughness of the weld metals are the fine particle formation elements such as Ti and Als; the Ar-rich gas weld metals have higher strength, but do not always have higher toughness than CO2 weld metals.
