The compact strip production (CSP) technology today accounts for around 10 per cent of the world´s hot-strip production with a total rated capacity of more than 45 million tpy. In traditional thin-slab technology, steelmaking is electric arc melting using scrap, direct-reduced iron as well as hot-briquetted iron as starting material and ladle furnace operations are applied for the refining process. The caster supplies thin slabs with thicknesses between 50 and 90 mm, which are hot charged without intermediate cooling and rolled to hot strips in the finishing mill. The product range has been continuously extended during the last 15 years. Today, CSP plants are used to produce almost the full range of steel grades which are needed for further processing by markets all over the world. Extensive developments have been carried out in the last few years with respect to the thermo-mechanical controlled processing of micro-alloyed high-strength steel grades which enable the test and commercial production of pipe line steel grades on thin slab casting lines. Today, the CSP technology based production of pipe grades up to API X70 becomes reality. API X80 and HIC resistance grades are still in trial stage but will soon enter standard production. The present report describes the ongoing development work concerning the metallurgical basisc as well as issues related to the production of high-strength steels with excellent engineerig properties like weldability and toughness which could be used for both longitudinal and spiral welded line pipes.
