摘要

The current needs of mankind for any product or service all depend on the availability and reliability of a wide range of machines, from textile mills and agriculatural tractors to aircraft, ships and railway rolling stock. All these machines contain moving parts and as a result have components which move relative to each other. The result have components which move relative to each other. The relative movements between these components are areas of sensitivity because speed of movement is often high, together with the load. A lot of energy is therefore being transmitted across these concentrated areas and if anything goes wrong the consequences are generally severe. Tribology involves an understanding of what happens at these points of relative movement, and it is therfore of vital importance in machine design and reliability, and thereforme also across the whole field of industrial activity.
