It is particularly fitting that the first Worl Tribology Congress is being held in London in 1997. The year marks the 150th. Anniversary of the founding of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers in Biromingham on January 27th 1847. The first president of the Institution was George Stephenson and the declared objective of the Institution was ...'To enable Machanics and Engineers engaged in the different Manufactories, Railways and other establishmnents in the Kingdom to neet and correspond, and by a mutual exchange of ideas repecting improvements in the various branches of Science, to increase their knowledge and given an impulse to Inventions likely to be useful to the world'. The American Society of Mechanical Engineers was founded in 1880, and its research Committee on Lubrication was established in 1915. The present year also marks the centenary of the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers.
