This paper describes the logical overall design of the IMAGE/3000 DBMS based library on-line of multi-user circulation system, SJTUCS (Shanghai Jiao Tong University Circulation System), with the barcode reader which enables us to read in the data of books or patrons rapidly and accurately. For the convenience of users, a structural "menu" is also considered and programmed.rnDue to the design considerations, SJTUCS is characterized by the following aspects: the convenient convertibility from traditional circulation systems to computer based systems with all the library holdings; the language transparency of the circulating books; and minimizing the data volume pre-established for starting the SJTUCS.rnThe most important consideration of the SJTUCS overall design is the presentation of a microcomputer system based supporting subsystem solution, insomuch that the SJTUCS can be used in all kinds of libraries, and has been used in Shanghai Jiao Tong University Library since April, 1st, 1986.
