Safety of RCC Gravity Dams over 200m Considering Hydraulic Fracturing

Longtan RCC gravity dam is 192m high for first stage and will be 216. 5m high after second stage construction. Guangzhao RCC gravity dam is 200. 5m high. Special technical specification should be made for dams higher than 200m according to Chinese design specification. The safety of high gravity dams with consideration of hydraulic fracturing under high water pressure has been studied in this paper. The authors have developed a lab model for concrete hydraulic fracturing simulation and comparing analyses have made with FEM program for concrete hydraulic fracturing. Studies have been made on Grand Dixence gravity dam (H = 285m) and a given gravity dam (H=216. 5m) with FEM. The results show that the design specification for Grand Dixence gravity dam is reasonable considering hydraulic fracturing influence. However, the safety of dams higher than 200m designed according to non-tensile criterion should be carefully investigated, especially RCC gravity dam.
