The preparation of carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) and methylcellulose (MC) from non-wood pulps (abaca, flax, hemp, jute and sisal) bleached by Elemental Chlorine Free (ECF) sequences was studied. The carboxymethylation was carried out by one and two successive reaction steps in isopropanol slurry using monochloroacetic acid at 55 ℃ for 3.5h. The methylation was carried out twice in isopropanol slurry using iodomethane at 60 ℃ for 22h after the pulp was mercerized in 50% NaOH solution for 1h at ambient temperature. Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectra showed the existence of substituted groups on the synthesized molecules. Substitution patterns of MC were determined by ~(13)C Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Substitution patterns of CMC were determined by H-NMR spectroscopy. The molecular weights of the water-soluble CMC and MC were determined by Size Exclusion Chromatography (SEC). CMC and MC of such better properties as greater degrees of substitution, molecular weights, viscosities and intrinsic viscosities were prepared from the pulps with higher accessibilities. The factors influencing the preparation of CMC and MC from these pulps were discussed.
