EVALUATION OF WHITE ROT FUNGAL DECAY ON BAMBOO (PHYLLOSTACHYS PUBESCENS)

In the present investigation, 49 white rot fungi including 43 wood decomposers and 6 litter decomposers for decaying bamboo were evaluated. Weight loss and cellulose, lignin and hemicelluloses loss in the decayed bamboo sample were measured by chemical analyses. Multivariate analysis on the data of chemical analyses was used to differentiate bamboo degradation pattern. Principal Component Analysis and Hierarchical Cluster Analysis were applied, in multivariate analysis. The tested fungi were classified into three groups by multivariate analysis. The group consisting of Trametes sp. CD3, Hygrophorus sp. 254 and TH2538 caused high lignin loss, high weight loss and very low cellulose loss. TH2538 had the greatest lignin-degrading ability among these three fungi, causing 24.28% lignin loss and 1.64% celluloses loss after 4-week incubation. In addition, a Litter decomposer, Hygrophorus sp. 254, had greater selective lignin-degrading ability than wood decomposers. These fungi are expected to have much potential for bamboo biopulping based on above results.
