In recent years, request for availability of continuously increasing transmission bandwidth has led to a great interest in the study and the analysis of optical communication systems. Research efforts have been spent to understand how the system performance can be characterized. In particular, the main target of a number of study has been the computation of the transmission bit error rate (BER), which is the main quantity to be evaluated in order to decide whether a system may be used or not. Studies, most of the time numerial, have been carried out on several different transmission schemes, either using dispersion shifted or step index fibers, possibly along with some dispersion compensators, and soliton or non return to zero (NRZ) pulses.
