A simple variational model is introduced and the dynamical system of the evolving pulse characteristics is integrated numerically in a case of a line with periodically modulated second order dispersion and third order dispersion. The results obtained are compared with ones of the full numerical integration of the corresponding generalized nonlinear Schrodinger equation. It is demonstrated that the variational model is in a Schrodinger equation. It is demonstrated that the variational model is in a fairly good agreement with the numerical exact one, although the influence of the third order dispersion seems rather weak in the variational model.
