We propose "Two-dimensional pulse width evaluation method" for the design of soliton communication systems. We applied this method to 20 Gbit/s transoceanic distance soliton lines. The amplifier output power becomes almost constant for all optimally designed soliton lines. The optimal averaged dispersion is reduced about 0.1 psm.km and two-soliton interaction is suppressed in periodically dispersion compensated case. Stable nonlinear transmission can be achieved even if the averaged dispersion of 0.0 psm.km. The dispersion compensation period should be longer than the amplifier spacing and 3 to 5 amplification spans are optimal.
