To meet the continuously increasing capacity demands in the interoffice transport network,optically amplified WDM architectures have been proven as practical, feasible and cost effectivealternatives. With more information carried over a single fiber now than ever, extremely focusedattention must be given to selection of appropriate protection architectures in multi-wavelengthnetworks in order to optimize network reliability, survivability. service consistency, and cost.This paper provides an overview and comparative analysis of protection architectures specific tooptically amplified WDM based Inter-Office Networks. We discuss several WDMimplementation options for the network planner and provide answers to the fundamentalquestion: “What criteria should the network planner use to select between UWDM and BWDMimplementation for a given network architecture, and what are the trade offs between the twoWDM schemes?” This critical issue has tremendous impact on the overall network reliability andinitial & long term cost of network construction for both the long distance and local exchangeservice provider.
