Clay - polymer nanocomposite materials have received significant interest in the industrial community for a number of novel applications. Dispersion of clay in a polymeric matrix can result in three general types of morphology: (1) macroscopic clay aggregates in the polymer, (2) intercalated clay with one or more molecular layers of the polymer inserted into the clay gallery, and (3) exfoliated clay with singular clay platelets randomly distributed in the polymer. It is the latter two arrangements of the clay in polymer that generate a variety of interesting properties in the resultant clay - polymer nanocomposites.
