Compounds of copper(I) and other low - valent metals have previously been shown to function as cross - linking agents which can decrease the amount of volatiles and increase the mass of char in thermally degrading poly (vinyl chloride) (PVC). Such compounds have potential for use as smoke - suppressant PVC additives. As part of a continuing search for new compounds of copper(I), complexes with bidentate bridging ligands have been prepared. These new complexes also contain bridging halide and terminal phosphite ligands. The presence of bridging ligands leads to the formation of relatively stable one- and two - dimensional inorganic polymer networks. The thermal chemistry of these compounds is discussed, with special emphasis on their potential use as additives for smoke suppression of PVC.
