A comparison is made between the elastic properties of nanocomposites and of composites filled with mica sheets. It is found that at low filler content the elastic properties of these composites are very similar and can both be predicted by composite modelling. Concerning the morphology of nanocomposites, mainly the aspect ratio of the clay layers has to be considered to explain the elastic properties. The particle size is of minor importance. Changes induced in the properties of the polymer by the high surface area of the clay layers only become important at high volume fractions of clay, outside the range of normal processable polymers. By comparing nanocomposites with mica - filled polymers it is found that at high clay content the effectiveness of the clay to increase the stiffness is strongly reduced.
