Given the continued costs of noise-induced hearing loss in mining, and the Mine Safety and Health Administration’s proactive attention given to all mines, an average noise exposure assessment compliance determination may be more appropriate for health risk assessment than the current shift-by-shift basis of compliance determination. A comparison of the two compliance schemes is presented using MSHA dose data from underground longwall coal mining.
