Despite the advancements made in the last couple decades, one particular industry has yet tornfully embrace the benefits offered by trenchless technologies. The installation of gravityrnwastewater and stormwater systems has historically favored open-cut construction, in partrnbecause of traditional construction practices, but mostly due to the perceptions of the cost-benefitrnratio associated with trenchless methods.rnThe City of Altoona (Iowa) just became the exception. Though governed by budgetary and costrnmandates, they challenged Snyder & Associates, Inc. to consider an alternative to open-cut onrnthe Prairie Vista Sanitary Sewer Connection project. Nothing about the project mandated thatrntraditional methods wouldn’t be acceptable – the ground conditions were favorable and thernproject location was in rural Polk County – but a trenchless option was added as an alternative inrnthe bid documents.rnJ&K Contracting LLC from Ames (Iowa) was awarded the contract and began a feasibility studyrnto determine whether vacuum microtunneling (VMT) was a cost-effective alternative to open-cutrnon approximately 3300 feet (1005.8 meters) of 10” (250mm) sanitary sewer. Though thisrnchanged the pipe requirement to restrained-joint PVC, the benefits and costs associated with thernboring process proved to be advantageous. After discussions with the City, the engineers, andrnthe equipment supplier, J&K Contracting opted to minimize the excavation on the project byrnboring over 90% of the footage with VMT.
