Guidance regarding the calculation of maximum allowable borehole fluid pressure during horizontal directionalrndrilling (HDD) is ambiguous in soil and nearly nonexistent in rock. Recent experience drilling in highly fracturedrnSouthern California rock indicates that mechanisms governing rock behavior under fluid pressure may differrnsubstantially from the traditional soil models. This paper reexamines the soil models available to calculate maximumrnallowable borehole fluid pressure during HDD and adapts those methods to the evaluation of maximum allowablernpressure in rock. The adaptations incorporate theoretical rock mechanics based on the Hoek-Brown failure criteria.rnFinally, the investigation is calibrated against groundwater response data and manifestations of hydraulic fracturingrnduring HDD operations at the White Point Landslide Project.
