Trenchless Solution for Drainage under a Railroad along the Hudson River

This project is to mitigate potential flooding over a railroad embankment during storm events. The existing tworndrainage pipes are insufficient to convey a 100-year storm event from the wetland on one side of the tracks to thernHudson River on the downstream side of the tracks. The ground conditions across this area along the Hudson wherernthe railroad was built are unknown. There is a rock cut on one side and it is assumed that the rock was placed into thernlow area to serve as the fill for the embankment. This railroad is a high traffic area for freight transportation. It wasrndecided that a trenchless method should be used to install three new 36" drainage pipes under the railroad to alleviaternthe current hydrologic loading. Based on a decision model for this project that we have proposed in this paper, pipernramming technology was considered as the most feasible construction methodology. The three new 36” drainage pipesrnwill be installed within tight clearance between the top of the new pipe and the bottom of the tidal elevation. Since thernproject site is located along the Hudson River and environmentally sensitive area, timely and appropriate permittingrnprocess will have their own challenges. The paper describes the project and brings this experience to others as anrnexample of a challenging project being solved through trenchless solutions, and a collaborative effort among thernowner, design engineer, and the contractor.
