Virginia DOT (VDOT) was interested to learn how PPR (Pipe Penetrating Radar) might be utilized for conditionrnassessment of plastic pipe, specifically newly installed HDPE and plastic culverts. This paper highlights a joint VDOTrn(Virginia Department of Transportation) and UV (University of Virginia) study to identify and validate the capabilitiesrnof the Future Scan PPR system. The pilot program for this study focused on two specific areas of concern: detectionrnof voids created during the HDD (Horizontal Directional Drilling) process, and identification of poor soil compactionrnoutside plastic culvert pipe. The HDD evaluation site consisted of a 15" HDPE pipe installed underneath a sensitivernintersection. For the soil compaction detection application, two sites at rural road crossings were chosen: one with arn30" double wall PP pipe, and another with a 48" triple wall PP pipe. This paper describes how the Future Scan PPRrntechnology was able to find voids outside the HDPE pipe, and how it was able to image variations in the backfill ofrnthe plastic culverts. Additional applications for the PPR system that were identified as a result of this pilot studyrninclude: the ability to measure ovality, and the surprise discovery of damage to the external pipe not visible on therninternal pipe wall thru CCTV inspection.
