Geotechnical report preparation for tunneling projects is a difficult and complicated process. Deciding what to say about ground conditions, and more particularly, about ground behavior is not obvious and depends on many variables only some of which are susceptible to control by the designer. This paper provides background information about geotechnical report writing, case histories relative to this topic and conclusions concerning the importance of a thoughtful, reasoned and highly structured approach to this important aspect of contract document preparation for tunneling projects.
