The New York City Transit Authority developed plans to rehabilitate the brick arch St. Georges Tunnel in Staten Island, New York. The rehabilitation would strengthen the existing brick arch with fabricated structural steel members as well as provide weep holes and a piping system in an attempt to eliminate water infiltration into the tunnel. A Value Engineering proposal was developed and accepted by the Transit Authority, which consisted of a NATM type waterproofing system, (PVC membrane with geotextile fabric), along with shotcrete and lattice girders to provide structural support of the tunnel. The advantages of this system will be discussed along with state of the art survey techniques, which were utilized to optimize each cross section along the tunnel.
