While much work has been done to predict the presence of boulders, their behavior during excavation remains a mystery. Disc cutters have been effective on boulders on some projects, but on others have plucked out or simply pushed the rocks aside, breaking cutting tools and interfering with the shield steering. In this paper, boulder-ground interaction is modeled for many scenarios using finite elements and the results are compared to 18 case histories. The key result of the research was the importance of boulder to soil shear strength ratio. As the ratio increases, the disc cutter load is transferred from the boulder to the soil. The model showed that when the rock-to-soil shear strength ratio is greater than 600:1, boulders cannot be broken by disc cutters. Of the 18 projects studied, nine validated the model results, seven projects were inconclusive in regards to model correlation and two discounted the model results.
