Modelling of secondary hydrocarbon migration is useful in risk assessment because it enables the quantities of oil and gas in undrilled prospects to be calculated. Monte-Carlo simulation techniques can be used together with secondary migration modelling to assess the oil and gas in-place resource distributions. Probability maps show the relationship between trapped oil and trapped gas in prospects. Many simulation runs will not match the known oil and gas fields, but calibration to discoveries can be made by choosing appropriate weighting functioins. Weighting as a function of distance between prospect and known hydrocarbon accumulations, migration migration pathway distances and positions relative to source rock kitchens can yield different distributions of trapped oil and gas.
