Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM’s) of both passenger car and commercialrnvehicles are asking for higher quality engine oils to help them get improved fuel economy, lowerrntailpipe emissions, and better lubrication during initial engine starts, while maintaining orrnextending oil drain intervals. These higher quality lubricants require the use of more highqualityrnlube basestocks and additives. Refiners have many different process technology optionsrnfor manufacturing these high quality basestocks. This paper discusses a new process forrnmanufacturing very high quality Group III+ basestocks by isomerizing and dewaxing slack waxrnin a single step. ExxonMobil plans to employ this process in an idled unit at its Fawley, U.K.rnrefinery in mid-2003. The unit will feed slack wax and use proprietary ExxonMobil processrntechnology and catalysts, specifically MSDW and MAXSAT, to make very high quality 4 and 6rncSt viscosity Group III+ basestocks. Extensive pilot plant and products testing has established therndesign basis for this project and set product specifications. The technology produces basestocksrnwith excellent volatility-viscosity characteristics. This technology is also very similar to therntechnology ExxonMobil is evaluating for upgrading wax made by Gas-to-Liquids (GTL) intornlube basestocks. As a result, we expect the Fawley Group III+ basestocks to be very similar tornthe basestocks that will eventually be produced by our future GTL plants.
