Stylolites have been reported in basinal, reef, forereef, andrnbackreef carbonates within the Permian Basin of West Texasrnand southeastern New Mexico. They are described as serratedrninterfaces between carbonate rock units and are composed ofrntheir insoluble residues. Samples of stylolites and adjacentrnhost rock were examined using x-ray diffraction and analyticalrnelectron microscopy. The results revealed a very closernrelationship between the stylolite and its host rock. Stylolitesrnare the markers indicating that considerable thicknesses ofrnstrata may have been dissolved away during diagenesis of therncarbonate. The extent (thickness) of stylolite seams mayrnaffect the porosity and permeability of a carbonate formation.rnPresence of fine platelets of micas and sulfur along with thernorganic matter in stylolites can make them impermeable tornfluid flow and seal petroleum reservoirs. The comparativernstudy of the mineralogy of the stylolites and the acid-residuesrnof their immediate host rocks directly points to the origin ofrnthese stylolite seams in these dolostones. The stylolitesrnanalyzed consist mainly of quartz, feldspars, pyrite, mica,rnnative sulfur, and organic material. All these minerals werernfound to be the impurities in the enclosing host carbonate. Itrnwas estimated that about 100 mm of the host dolomite columnrnmust have been dissolved to generate a stylolite with arnthickness of about 1.0 mm.
