Well abandonment operations represent pure cost to the operator without return on their expenditure.rnHowever, to manage future liability, these activities are critically important. Performing them correctlyrninvolves detailed planning. Good practice places a permanent barrier across the wellbore in competent caprnrock and embeds all tubulars in the cement. Herein lies the main challenge for well abandonment; annularrnisolation is sometimes compromised or wasn't there from the start (e.g., subsea wells). Addressing thesernannular isolation issues results in extra steps in the well abandonment process, translating into extra timernand money for the operator.rnThis paper will discuss field-proven, cost-effective solutions for casing removal including reducing thernsurface footprint or providing a single-trip solution that lowers the overall cost of operation.rnMultiple case histories will highlight different challenges, solved by novel ideas and a combination ofrnsurface systems and downhole equipment.
