The quantitative evaluation of the overburden gradient, porernpressure and fracture gradient plays an important role inrndrilling successful wells mainly in gas basins and deepwaterrnreservoirs. The ability to quantify geopressures, before andrnwhile drilling, is then a primary factor in reducing drillingrncosts.rnThe new strategy for exploring non-associated gas inrnMexico has increased both the exploration and productionrnactivities. As a result, the exploratory wells have requiredrnmore geopressure information before drilling in order tornreduce the risks associated with subsurface formationrnpressures. To accomplish this objective, the Mexican oilrngovernment company, Pemex E&P, has addressed a strategyrninvolving the Exploration and Drilling Departments tornimprove the understanding of geopressure to enable properrncasing and mud program designs. In addition, an explorationrnunderstanding on trapping and sealing conditions has beenrnaddressed.rnA good understanding of rock properties combined withrnthe best geophysical practices of seismic pressure predictionrnhave derived methodologies applicable to the process. Anrnexample summarizes the benefits involved in thisrnmultidisciplinary approach. Lessons learned and conclusionsrnare included in this paper.
