Experiments are being performed with a prototype suctionrncaisson in tanks of soft clay. This paper contains recent testrnresults and numerical simulations showing the reconsolidationrnbehavior of the soil around the installed caisson. The 100-mmrndiameter caisson prototype was proportionally dimensioned tornrepresent a typical offshore suction caisson. Tests werernconducted in normally consolidated deposits of kaolinite clay,rnwhich were formed to simulate common seafloor conditions.rnLarge tanks of the soil were prepared by consolidating a slurryrnto a final thickness of about 1.1 m, a process that took aboutrneight months. Caissons were then installed using dead weightrnand/or suction. Instrumentation was used to recordrndisplacements, axial forces, and pore water pressures duringrninstallation and extraction of the caisson. Tests with thernprototype caisson, as well as tests with a flat plate insertedrnvertically into the test bed deposit, show an increase in pulloutrncapacity with time (set-up) as the soil reconsolidates followingrninstallation. Data are presented showing the dissipation ofrnexcess pore water pressures on the interior and exterior of thernprototype caisson. The measured pore pressures are alsorncompared to results from a finite element simulation of thernreconsolidation process. These results demonstrate how thernpullout capacity of a suction caisson may be limited if largernloads are applied prior to full soil reconsolidation.
