Flowline depressurization ("blowdown") is an effective flowrnassurance operation to protect flowlines from hydraternformation for unplanned or extended shutdowns. Bothrnnumerical simulations and field experience have shown thatrnblowdown is generally feasible for uphill flowlines over arnwide range of gas-liquid ratios (GOR), water cuts andrnoperating conditions. It is often assumed, however, thatrnblowdown is not feasible for downhill-sloping flowlines,rnwhere liquid accumulated in the riser cannot be fullyrndischarged to reduce the flowline pressure. OLGArncalculations presented here indicate that blowdown is in factrnsuccessful for downhill flowlines, although in a more narrowrnoperating envelope than for monotonic uphill flowlines.rnRequirements for blowdown feasibility are identified over arnrange of governing parameters, including fluid GOR and waterrncut, and flowline/riser geometry (i.e. diameter, water depth,rnoffset length, inclination). Based on this generalized analysis,rnoperating strategies to increase blowdown effectiveness forrndownhill flowlines are evaluated. The impact of terrainrnslugging on blowdown feasibility, which generallyrnaccompanies flowlines with downhill inclination, is alsornevaluated. Reasonably good agreement of computationalrnresults with available deepwater field data for blowdown isrnobserved.
