Abstract: The photodynamic properties of chlorine e$-6$/ trimethyl ester (E6), methyl pheophorbid a (MPh), and pheophytin a (Ph), in Ehrlich carcinoma cells were investigated both in vitro and in vivo. All above mentioned photosensitizers (PS) induced the photoirradiated death of neoplasm cells. There was an inverse relationship between the hydrophobicity of the PS and its photodynamic activity (less hydrophobic E6 was shown to be most effective PS). According to the data, irradiation of Ehrlich carcinoma cells in the presence of E6 caused a dramatic decrease in ATP level. The latter could be connected with suppression of the intensity of anaerobic glycolysis and consumption of oxygen. It could be supposed that a decrease in ATP level in Ehrlich carcinoma cells is mainly due to the uncoupling of oxidative phosphorylation. At the same time, supplementary addition of doxorubicin (a chemical decreasing the functional activity of mitochondria) to E6 increased both in vitro and in vivo the phototoxicity of E6. The key role of an energetic status of tumor cells in their resistance to the photodynamic action is proposed.!
