Abstract: The full data quality desired from all previous earth-limb measurements in the LWIR has never been realized. The prime cause for this was determined by analyzing flight data. Indications show that leakage from off-axis sources or the effects of the near-field environment are causing the problem. Both conditions degrade the quality of the data and obscure the wanted signal. Limited data from previous Shuttle and rocket launches have raised questions concerning contamination problems that could be of great significance. Mission restrictions and system precautions will be reviewed. An assessment of our results will be presented as compared to the current models and previous data. The data shows how telescope leakage and or contamination effects can dominate the minimum signal floor and place a limit on the weakest signal that can be measured when these undesired elements are present.!4
