Abstract: The sensitive, high resolution CIRRIS-1A radiometers/interferometer provided a unique capability to probe the optical environment surrounding the shuttle on the STS 39 mission. Ground processing was carefully controlled to minimize the contamination levels. Early in the mission all surfaces were subjected to extended solar exposure. These efforts were successful in that most of the data showed no evidence of contamination effects. However, particulate contamination effects were occasionally observed. The range and size of discrete particles are extracted from the particle radiances, spectral distributions, and blur circles.!11
