Along with the development of information society, the requirement of high speed, large capacity transport system is more and more important. 40 Gb/s based optical transport system could provide more high speed and more large capacity information transport. So it is development trend of optical transmission system. In this paper, the research and development progress of 40 Gb/s (STM-256) SDH optical transmission system and 80x40 Gb/s DWDM system in China have been introduced, including Key technologies of 40 Gb/s optical signal transport and some test results of 40 Gb/s SDH optical system and 80x40 Gb/s DWDM system have been showed.
