摘要

A methodology for assessing the impact of ionising radiation has been developed to assist the UK Environment Agency and English Nature in fulfilling their statutory obligations related to the discharge and disposal of radioactive wastes. The methodology is based on the concepts of reference ecosystems and reference organisms, currently also being developed in a number of international initiatives, and is intended as a prototype or interim assessment tool which can be used pending the outcome of current international developments. Its use has confirmed the overall feasibility of the reference ecosystem/reference organism concepts, and has identified a number of challenges, which can feed into the ongoing international developments.
