摘要

Grey haired engineers in large organizations appear tornbe far less common than the baby boom would suggest.rnAn historic assumption is that they were promoted intornmanagement functions. A random sample of 270rnmature engineers was taken. More than one thirdrnagreed to be interviewed by telephone. Supportingrnevidence of current status was found for another third.rnThe assumption of promotion to explain the lack ofrnmature engineers is not supported. Most began leavingrnthe large organizations in significant numbers atrnaround 50 years of age. Those in managementrnpositions have the same attrition rate as the front linernpositions. Dealing with a potential shortage ofrnengineers by extending the retirement age past 65rnwould have no noticeable impact based on thesernresults.
